AFP (Alpha-Fetoprotein) is a protein produced by the fetal liver and yolk sac during pregnancy. In non-pregnant adults, AFP should be present at very low levels. Elevated AFP can indicate hepatocellular carcinoma (liver cancer), germ cell tumors (testicular and ovarian), or liver regeneration from hepatitis or cirrhosis. It is recommended as a surveillance tool for patients with chronic hepatitis B, hepatitis C, or cirrhosis who are at high risk for liver cancer.
