Lab Visit Guide

Your blood draw, demystified.

You ordered. Now what? Here’s exactly what to do before, during, and after your lab visit — so you walk in confident and walk out on track.

Before

Prep at home

Fast (if needed), hydrate, take meds as usual.

At the lab

Quick draw

Walk in, hand over your requisition, ~15 min total.

After

Results in your portal

1–3 business days, physician-reviewed, no follow-up call needed.

Before you go

The 4 things that matter

Most lab tests need almost no prep. The few that do are listed in your order email — these are the universals.

Fast for 8–12 hours

Only if your test requires it (lipid panels, glucose, insulin, full metabolic panels). Water, black coffee, and prescribed medications are usually fine. Your order email lists exact prep instructions.

Morning is better for hormones

Testosterone, cortisol, and many other hormones peak in the morning. If you're testing those, aim for a draw before 10 AM.

Hydrate well

Drink 2–3 glasses of water before your visit — it makes the draw faster and easier on your veins.

Continue your medications

Unless your provider told you otherwise, take your normal meds with water. Stopping suddenly can affect results more than the meds themselves.

What to bring

Two things, that's it

No insurance card, no appointment, no doctor's note. Just these:

Required

  • Government-issued photo ID

Driver's license, state ID, or passport.

  • Your lab requisition

Either printed OR pulled up on your phone — both work. We email it to you and it lives in your patient portal under "Download requisition."

You DON’T need

  • An insurance cardTestWell is self-pay — no insurance needed or accepted.

  • An appointmentQuest, Labcorp, and BioReference all accept walk-ins for our orders. No calling ahead.

  • A doctor's orderOur network physicians review and approve every order before the requisition is issued — that's already done.

At the lab

The 4-step visit

Total time: 15–30 minutes door to door. The actual draw is 2–5 minutes.

1

Sign in at the front desk

Hand over your photo ID and pull up the requisition (printed or on phone). The tech will look it up by name and date of birth.

2

Wait briefly

Walk-in waits at most lab locations are 10–20 minutes. Quest and Labcorp's busiest hours are 7–9 AM (the fasting crowd) — try mid-morning or early afternoon if you can.

3

The draw itself

A trained phlebotomist will draw 1–4 small tubes of blood depending on your panel. The whole thing takes 2–5 minutes. If you're afraid of needles, tell the tech — they're great at this.

4

You're done

Cotton ball, bandage, and you're out the door. Total visit time is usually 15–30 minutes door to door.

After your visit

What happens next

Common questions

The stuff people actually ask

No — your TestWell order is paid in full at checkout. Quest and Labcorp see your requisition as a fully prepaid order and don't bill you again. The only exception is the disclosed Labcorp draw fee at certain locations, which we surface on the lab selector before you order.
