Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) measures the percentage of hemoglobin in your red blood cells that has sugar attached to it. Because red blood cells live for about 3 months, this test reflects your average blood sugar over the past 2–3 months. It's the primary test for diagnosing and monitoring diabetes and prediabetes. An A1c below 5.7% is normal, 5.7–6.4% indicates prediabetes, and 6.5% or above indicates diabetes.
Reflects average blood-glucose levels over the past 2-3 months. The standard test for diagnosing and monitoring type 2 diabetes and prediabetes.
Anyone with frequent thirst, frequent urination, unexplained fatigue, family history of diabetes, BMI over 25, on GLP-1 medications, or screening annually after age 35.
