A basic glucose test measures the amount of sugar (glucose) in your blood. It is one of the most commonly ordered blood tests and is used to screen for diabetes and prediabetes, monitor blood sugar control, and evaluate hypoglycemia. Fasting glucose levels above 100 mg/dL may indicate prediabetes, while levels above 126 mg/dL on two separate occasions are diagnostic of diabetes. This test is recommended as part of routine health screenings, especially for individuals with risk factors such as obesity, family history, or sedentary lifestyle.
Single fasting blood-glucose measurement. A snapshot of current blood sugar; pair with A1c for the full diabetes screening picture.
Annual screening for adults 35+, anyone with diabetes risk factors (family history, BMI >25, sedentary lifestyle), monitoring during pregnancy, anyone with classic symptoms (thirst, frequent urination, fatigue).
