Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) is a protein produced by the prostate gland. Elevated PSA can indicate prostate cancer, but it can also be raised by benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), prostatitis, or recent ejaculation. The test is most commonly used for prostate cancer screening in men over 50 (or 40–45 for those at higher risk). Discussion with a healthcare provider about the benefits and limitations of PSA screening is recommended.
