C-Reactive Protein (CRP) is a protein produced by the liver in response to inflammation anywhere in the body. Unlike hs-CRP (which measures very low levels for cardiac risk), standard CRP measures higher levels associated with infections, autoimmune conditions, inflammatory bowel disease, and tissue injury. It's a general marker that indicates something is causing inflammation but doesn't specify the source.
