What blood tests are used for joint pain?
Short answer
Blood tests sort joint pain into inflammatory, autoimmune and metabolic causes. The standard screen is CRP and sed rate (inflammation), rheumatoid factor and ANA (autoimmune), and uric acid (gout); a CBC and CMP complete the baseline. Results point toward — never confirm — a diagnosis a clinician makes with your exam and history.

When should you see a clinician instead of ordering a test?
- A single hot, red, swollen joint with fever — seek care the same day (possible infection)
- Joint pain with a rash, mouth ulcers, chest pain or unexplained fever
- Sudden inability to bear weight or move a joint after an injury
Why these tests for joint pain?
Inflammatory arthritis raises CRP and ESR; rheumatoid arthritis often shows rheumatoid factor; lupus and related conditions are screened with ANA; gout is suggested by high uric acid. Osteoarthritis — the most common joint pain — produces normal blood tests, which is itself useful information.
A positive ANA or rheumatoid factor is common in healthy people and means 'look further', not 'you have the disease'. Interpretation belongs with a clinician, often a rheumatologist.

Common questions
Does a normal CRP mean my joint pain isn't serious?
It makes an inflammatory cause less likely and osteoarthritis or mechanical causes more likely. It doesn't rule out disease — some inflammatory conditions run with normal CRP.
What does a positive ANA mean?
That antibodies against cell nuclei were detected. Low-titer positives are common in healthy people; a clinician decides whether follow-up antibody testing is warranted based on your symptoms.
