Reticulocytes are young, immature red blood cells that have just been released from the bone marrow. A reticulocyte count reveals how quickly the bone marrow is producing new red blood cells. In anemia, this test helps determine whether the bone marrow is responding appropriately (high reticulocytes = the marrow is trying to compensate, as in blood loss or hemolytic anemia) or failing to produce enough cells (low reticulocytes = bone marrow problem, nutritional deficiency, or chronic disease). It is also used to monitor recovery after chemotherapy, bone marrow transplant, or treatment for nutritional anemia.

Your Reticulocyte Count results will include values for each of the 2 biomarkers tested, along with reference ranges. Results are reviewed by a licensed physician before being released to your secure portal.
If any values fall outside the normal range, your report will include guidance on what that may mean and recommended next steps. You'll receive an email notification when your results are ready, typically within 1–3 business days.
