Also known as: Platelet Count Blood Test, PLT Test, Thrombocyte Count
The short answer
A standalone platelet count — the clotting-cell number from a CBC on its own, measured from a standard blood draw. At TestWell it costs $14.99 plus a $6 lab processing fee, needs no fasting, and results post in 1–3 business days. Physician-authorized with no doctor's visit or insurance needed; draw at Quest or Labcorp.

Platelets (thrombocytes) are the cell fragments that plug a damaged vessel and start a clot; the count tells you whether you have enough of them to clot normally and not so many that clotting becomes a risk. Most people meet their platelet count as one line of a complete blood count, and a CBC is still the right first test — it costs $7 more here and adds red and white cell counts, hemoglobin and the differential. A standalone platelet count earns its place when the question is only about platelets: re-checking a single low or high value from a previous CBC, monitoring on a medication known to lower platelets, or following a diagnosis such as immune thrombocytopenia with a provider. Mildly low counts are common and often temporary (viral illness, some medications, alcohol); very low counts cause easy bruising and bleeding and need a clinician the same day. Mildly high counts are usually reactive — iron deficiency, inflammation, recent surgery or infection — which is why ferritin and CRP are the natural companions. Measured on an automated hematology analyzer at Quest or Labcorp (BioReference in New York and New Jersey); a clumped-platelet artifact can read falsely low, so an unexpectedly low result is usually repeated.
