What does a low MCHC mean?

Short answer

Low MCHC (hypochromia) means red cells are pale — less hemoglobin per unit of volume. It is a feature of iron deficiency and thalassemia, and can accompany anemia of chronic disease and lead exposure. It is read with MCV and MCH; ferritin decides whether iron is the answer.

What is the difference between MCH and MCHC?

MCH is hemoglobin per cell; MCHC is hemoglobin per unit of cell volume (concentration). Both fall in iron deficiency; MCHC rises in spherocytosis where cells shrink but keep their hemoglobin.
