A routine urine culture grows and identifies bacteria present in the urine to diagnose urinary tract infections (UTIs). Unlike a standard urinalysis which only suggests infection, a culture confirms the specific bacteria involved and includes antimicrobial susceptibility testing to determine which antibiotics will be most effective for treatment. This test is recommended for patients with UTI symptoms (burning urination, frequency, urgency, cloudy or foul-smelling urine), recurrent UTIs, or when a urinalysis shows signs of infection. It is also commonly ordered pre-operatively for urological procedures.
