Also known as: Gastrin
The short answer
Gastrin measures Gastrin from a standard blood draw. At TestWell it costs $39.99 plus a $6 lab processing fee, requires an 8–12 hour fast, and results post in 3–5 business days. Physician-authorized with no doctor's visit or insurance needed; draw at Labcorp.

Gastrin is released by G cells in the stomach's antrum and tells the parietal cells to make acid; acid, in turn, switches gastrin off. That feedback loop is what makes the test useful. When the acid-making cells have been destroyed — autoimmune atrophic gastritis, the condition behind pernicious anemia — there is no acid to switch gastrin off and the level climbs, often several-fold, which is why gastrin is read alongside the intrinsic factor and parietal cell antibodies in that workup. Proton-pump inhibitors (omeprazole, pantoprazole and relatives) raise gastrin by the same mechanism, so a result drawn on a PPI mainly reflects the medication. Very high levels with active ulcers and diarrhea raise the question of a gastrinoma (Zollinger-Ellison syndrome), which is diagnosed by a gastroenterologist with further testing — this test does not make that diagnosis on its own. Low or normal gastrin with normal B12 makes atrophic gastritis unlikely. Run on serum at Labcorp (test 004390) after a 12-hour fast; eating raises gastrin for several hours.

1 biomarker tested
Your Gastrin results will include values for each of the 1 biomarker tested, along with reference ranges. Results are reviewed by a licensed physician before being released to your secure portal.
If any values fall outside the normal range, your report will include guidance on what that may mean and recommended next steps. You'll receive an email notification when your results are ready, typically within 3–5 business days.

Fast 12 hours before the draw (water is fine). Gastrin rises for hours after a meal. If you take a proton-pump inhibitor (omeprazole, esomeprazole, pantoprazole, lansoprazole), ask your clinician whether to pause it beforehand — PPIs raise gastrin several-fold and will dominate the result; do not stop a prescribed medication on your own.
TestWell orders the same Gastrin the labs run for doctors' offices, so you can walk into any of these labs with our requisition — no doctor's visit, a licensed physician authorizes the order, and most patient service centers take walk-ins. The table shows each lab's own test code, the name printed on the requisition, what the lab charges on its own consumer site, and the price through TestWell at that lab (plus one $6 fee per order).
| Lab | Test code | On the requisition | Lab's own site | Through TestWell |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Labcorp | test no. 004390 | “Gastrin” | not sold direct | $39.99 + $6 |
| BioReference (New York & New Jersey) | test code 0508-2 | “Gastrin” | n/a | $42.99 + $6 |
You choose the lab at checkout; the requisition is written for that lab and arrives by email within minutes. New York and New Jersey orders draw at BioReference. Lab-direct prices are read from the labs' public pages and re-checked regularly.
