What does a low Hematocrit mean?
Short answer
A low hematocrit means anemia — the same causes and workup as a low hemoglobin: iron deficiency, B12 or folate deficiency, blood loss, chronic disease or kidney disease. Overhydration lowers it slightly, and it runs a little lower in pregnancy. The MCV and a ferritin are the fastest way to the cause.

Common questions
Is hematocrit or hemoglobin more important?
They move together and say the same thing. Hemoglobin is the primary anemia marker; hematocrit is used for polycythemia thresholds.
