Thyroid Peroxidase (TPO) antibodies target an enzyme in the thyroid gland that plays a key role in producing thyroid hormones. Elevated TPO antibodies are the hallmark of Hashimoto's thyroiditis, the most common cause of hypothyroidism. They can be elevated years before thyroid hormone levels become abnormal.
Thyroid Peroxidase antibodies — the most sensitive single marker for autoimmune thyroid disease (Hashimoto's). Used to confirm autoimmunity when TSH is abnormal.
