The short answer
Estrone (E1) — the estrogen that takes over after menopause, measured from a standard blood draw. At TestWell it costs $49.99 plus a $6 lab processing fee, needs no fasting, and results post in 3–6 business days. Physician-authorized with no doctor's visit or insurance needed; draw at Quest or Labcorp.

Estrone is one of the body's three main estrogens, alongside estradiol (E2) and estriol (E3). Before menopause it is a minor player: the ovaries make estradiol, and estrone mostly serves as a precursor that is converted into it. After menopause the ovaries stop, and estrone becomes the dominant estrogen — produced not by the ovaries but by the conversion of androstenedione, an adrenal androgen, in fat tissue by the enzyme aromatase. That is why estrone runs higher in people with more body fat, and why a postmenopausal woman can have a near-zero estradiol and still carry a meaningful estrogen load. Clinicians order estrone in a few situations: postmenopausal bleeding, where the question is whether peripheral estrogen production is stimulating the uterine lining; menopausal hormone therapy, especially oral estrogens, which are converted to estrone in the liver and raise E1 far more than E2, so the ratio tells you something about how the hormone is being delivered; estrogen excess in men, including breast tissue growth, where aromatase activity rather than testicular estradiol is often the source; and broader hormone workups — irregular or absent periods, PCOS, fertility — where estrone rounds out the estradiol picture. An estrone-to-estradiol ratio above one is also one of the markers of the menopausal transition. Results are reported in pg/mL against age- and cycle-specific ranges from the performing lab; the two labs we route to use different methods (Quest runs estrone by LC-MS/MS, Labcorp by immunoassay), so if you are tracking the number over time, repeat it at the same lab.

1 biomarker tested
Your Estrone (E1) results will include values for each of the 1 biomarker tested, along with reference ranges. Results are reviewed by a licensed physician before being released to your secure portal.
If any values fall outside the normal range, your report will include guidance on what that may mean and recommended next steps. You'll receive an email notification when your results are ready, typically within 3–6 business days.
Typical reference range layout
Lab reports show where your value sits relative to established reference intervals—your physician interprets this in context for you. Already have results? Analyze them with your AI assistant against our physician-reviewed ranges.
No fasting required. If you still have a menstrual cycle, note the cycle day — ranges differ across the cycle. If you take estrogen therapy, draw at the same point in your dosing schedule each time (for oral estrogen, ideally before the day's dose). Not for use during pregnancy. For trend tracking, repeat at the same lab: Quest and Labcorp use different methods and their numbers are not interchangeable.
TestWell orders the same Estrone (E1) the labs run for doctors' offices, so you can walk into any of these labs with our requisition — no doctor's visit, a licensed physician authorizes the order, and most patient service centers take walk-ins. The table shows each lab's own test code, the name printed on the requisition, what the lab charges on its own consumer site, and the price through TestWell at that lab (plus one $6 fee per order).
| Lab | Test code | On the requisition | Lab's own site | Through TestWell |
