GGT is an enzyme found in the liver and bile ducts. It's one of the most sensitive markers for liver and bile duct problems. GGT is particularly useful for detecting alcohol-related liver damage and bile duct obstruction. It's often ordered alongside other liver enzymes to help differentiate between liver and bone sources of elevated alkaline phosphatase.
Gamma-Glutamyl Transferase — the most sensitive marker of biliary obstruction and the best single marker for alcohol-related liver injury. Often elevated when AST/ALT are still normal.
Anyone with elevated alkaline phosphatase (to confirm liver vs bone origin), suspected alcohol-related liver disease, monitoring statin or anti-seizure medications, evaluating bile duct obstruction.
