Which lab tests help with chronic bloating?
Short answer
Chronic bloating with diarrhea, fatigue or weight change deserves a celiac screen (tTG-IgA with total IgA), a CBC and iron studies for the malabsorption it can cause, and stool calprotectin when inflammatory bowel disease is a concern. Most bloating is functional (IBS) and produces normal tests — which helps rule out the conditions that don't.

When should you see a clinician instead of ordering a test?
- Bloating with blood in the stool, black stools, persistent vomiting or severe pain — see a clinician promptly
- Persistent bloating with pelvic pain, early fullness or unexplained weight loss, especially in women over 50 — see a clinician
Why these tests for bloating?
Celiac disease is common, frequently missed and reliably screened by blood antibodies while you're still eating gluten. Calprotectin in stool distinguishes inflammatory bowel disease from irritable bowel syndrome without a scope. Low iron, B12 or folate on the CBC and iron panel are clues to malabsorption.
Which conditions do these tests help evaluate?
- Celiac Disease — Celiac antibody testing and the markers used to screen for gluten-related disease.
Which tests, and what do they cost?
Prices are cash-pay; every order adds one $6 lab processing fee. Physician authorization is included; no insurance or referral needed.

Common questions
Should I stop eating gluten before a celiac test?
No. Celiac antibody tests depend on ongoing gluten exposure; going gluten-free first can turn a true positive into a false negative.
