What does a low Phosphorus mean?
Short answer
Low phosphorus results from poor intake or absorption (malnutrition, alcohol use, antacids that bind phosphate, vitamin D deficiency), shifts into cells (refeeding after starvation, insulin treatment, recovery from ketoacidosis), or losses through the kidneys (hyperparathyroidism, some medications). Mild lows are often meaningless; severe lows cause weakness and, rarely, heart and breathing problems.
