Cat allergy is a reaction to proteins in cat skin flakes (dander), saliva and urine — chiefly Fel d 1, which clings to clothing and furniture and lingers for months after a cat is gone. This test measures the IgE antibody your immune system makes against cat dander; a raised level means you are sensitized, and together with your symptoms it tells your clinician whether the cat is a likely cause. Unlike skin-prick testing, a blood test is not affected by antihistamines, so there is nothing to stop beforehand. It is a single-allergen test: if you also react around dogs, the Dog Allergy Test or the Dog & Cat combo covers both. A negative result makes cat allergy unlikely but does not rule out non-allergic irritation from fur or litter dust.
