Creatine Kinase · high result
What does a high Creatine Kinase mean?
Short answer
Creatine kinase leaks from damaged muscle, so a high value after hard exercise, a fall, an injection or an intramuscular injury is expected and can last several days. Statins are the most common medication cause; hypothyroidism, viral illness, seizures and inherited muscle conditions are others. Very high values (over ~5–10× the limit) with dark urine mean rhabdomyolysis and need urgent care.

When does this result need same-day care?
- CK above ~5× the upper limit with dark urine, severe weakness or reduced urine output — emergency care (rhabdomyolysis)
What is the normal range for Creatine Kinase?
- Male, age 18+: 39.0 – 308 U/L
- Female, age 18+: 26.0 – 192 U/L
Often reflects intense exercise, muscle injury, certain medications (statins), or cardiac events.

What are the common causes of high Creatine Kinase?
- Strenuous or unaccustomed exercise (can raise CK for a week)
- Statins and fibrates; some antipsychotics
- Muscle injury, injections, falls, seizures, surgery
- Hypothyroidism
- Viral myositis, alcohol
- Inflammatory or inherited muscle disease (persistent elevation)
- Normal variation: higher in men, people with more muscle mass and of African ancestry
What symptoms go with high Creatine Kinase?
- Muscle soreness, weakness, cramps
- Dark or cola-colored urine — urgent
What do clinicians usually check next?
- Repeat after 5–7 days without strenuous exercise
- TSH; medication review with the prescriber if on a statin
- Kidney function and urinalysis if very high
- Neurology/rheumatology if persistently high without exercise
Follow-up tests available at TestWell: TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone) ($26.99), TSH + Free T4 ($27.99).
How do you recheck Creatine Kinase?
Prices are cash-pay; every order adds one $6 lab processing fee. Physician authorization is included; no insurance or referral needed.
| Test or panel | Type | Price | Fasting | Results |

| Fitness & Performance Panel | Panel · 8 tests | $119.99 | Yes | 2–5 business days |
| Total Body Panel | Panel · 49 tests | $499.99 | Yes | 5–10 business days |
| Creatine Kinase (CK) | Test | $18.99 | No | 1–3 business days |
Common questions
How high can CK go from exercise alone?
Marathons, CrossFit-style sessions and heavy eccentric lifting can push CK to several thousand U/L for a few days in healthy people. It should fall steadily; a value still rising after rest is the concern.
