What does a high AST mean?
Short answer
AST rises with liver injury but also with muscle injury, heart muscle damage and hemolysis, so it's read alongside ALT and CK. AST higher than ALT (a ratio above 2) suggests alcohol-related liver disease or advanced scarring; ALT higher than AST is the usual fatty-liver pattern. Recent hard exercise is a common benign cause.

Common questions
My AST is high but ALT is normal. What does that mean?
