Haptoglobin · high result
What does a high Haptoglobin mean?
Short answer
Haptoglobin is an acute-phase protein, so it rises with inflammation, infection, tissue injury, some cancers, nephrotic syndrome and corticosteroid use. A high haptoglobin has little meaning on its own; its main importance is that inflammation can mask hemolysis by holding haptoglobin in the normal range when it should be low.

What is the normal range for Haptoglobin?
- age 18+: 30.0 – 200 mg/dL
Can reflect inflammation or infection (haptoglobin is also an acute-phase reactant).

What are the common causes of high Haptoglobin?
- Acute or chronic inflammation, infection
- Tissue injury, surgery, heart attack
- Corticosteroids, some androgens
- Nephrotic syndrome, cancers
- Obesity, smoking (mild)
What symptoms go with high Haptoglobin?
- None from haptoglobin itself
What do clinicians usually check next?
- CRP or ESR to gauge inflammation
- If hemolysis was the question, rely on reticulocytes, LDH and bilirubin — haptoglobin is unreliable during inflammation
Follow-up tests available at TestWell: Body Inflammation Test (ESR) ($18.99), C-Reactive Protein (CRP) ($26.99), LDH (Lactate Dehydrogenase) ($19.99), Sed Rate (ESR) ($24.99).
How do you recheck Haptoglobin?
Prices are cash-pay; every order adds one $6 lab processing fee. Physician authorization is included; no insurance or referral needed.
| Test or panel | Type | Price | Fasting | Results |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Comprehensive Anemia Workup | Panel · 8 tests | $169.99 | Yes | 3–5 business days |
| Haptoglobin | Test | $101.99 | No | 2–4 business days |
Common questions
Is high haptoglobin a problem?
Not by itself — it is a nonspecific inflammation marker. Its relevance is that inflammation can hide hemolysis on this test.
