What does a high Estradiol mean?
Short answer
In women who cycle, a 'high' estradiol is often just mid-cycle — levels peak before ovulation — so cycle day is essential. Persistently high levels can come from estrogen therapy, ovarian cysts or tumors, obesity (fat tissue makes estrogen) and liver disease. In men, high estradiol usually accompanies testosterone therapy, obesity or liver disease and can cause breast tenderness.

What are the common causes of high Estradiol?
- Normal pre-ovulatory peak (cycle days ~10–14) or pregnancy
- Estrogen-containing medication or hormone therapy
- Obesity — aromatization of androgens to estrogen
- Men: testosterone therapy, obesity, liver disease
- Ovarian cysts or estrogen-producing tumors (rare); testicular or adrenal tumors in men (rare)
