What does a high Folate mean?

Short answer

A high folate level almost always reflects supplements or fortified foods and is not harmful in itself. The one caution: high folate intake can mask the anemia of an undiagnosed vitamin B12 deficiency while nerve damage continues, so a high folate with tingling, memory change or a high MCV should prompt a B12 check. Rarely, very high folate accompanies B12 deficiency itself (folate can't be used without B12).

Common questions

Is too much folic acid dangerous?

Excess is excreted and the level itself isn't harmful. The concern is masking B12 deficiency, so a B12 test is the sensible companion.
