Iron Saturation · high result
What does a high Iron Saturation mean?
Short answer
Transferrin saturation above about 45% is the most useful screening signal for iron overload, and above 50–55% strongly suggests hereditary hemochromatosis when persistent. A recent iron supplement or meal raises it transiently, so a fasting repeat comes first. Hemolysis, liver disease and ineffective red-cell production also raise saturation.

What is the normal range for Iron Saturation?
- age 18+: 20.0 – 50.0 %
Can reflect iron overload (e.g. hemochromatosis) or supplement excess.

What are the common causes of high Iron Saturation?
- Recent iron supplement or iron-rich meal
- Hereditary hemochromatosis
- Excess supplementation or transfusions
- Liver disease, hemolysis, some anemias with ineffective red-cell production
What symptoms go with high Iron Saturation?
- Usually none early
- Fatigue, joint pain, liver enlargement, skin darkening, diabetes in advanced overload
What do clinicians usually check next?
- Fasting repeat
- Ferritin
- HFE gene testing if persistently above 45%
- Liver enzymes; family screening if positive
Follow-up tests available at TestWell: Ferritin ($24.99).
How do you recheck Iron Saturation?
Prices are cash-pay; every order adds one $6 lab processing fee. Physician authorization is included; no insurance or referral needed.

Common questions
What saturation suggests hemochromatosis?
Persistently above 45% (some use 50% for men, 45% for women) on a fasting sample. Genetic testing for HFE C282Y and H63D confirms it.
