What does a high AMH mean?
Short answer
High AMH means many small follicles are active in the ovaries — most often PCOS, where AMH is typically two to three times higher than average for age. A high AMH in someone without PCOS features can simply mean an above-average egg reserve, which is favorable for fertility treatment but also raises the risk of over-response to stimulation. Rarely, granulosa cell tumors raise it markedly.

What is the normal range for AMH?
- Female, age 18–35: 1.00 – 6.80 ng/mL
- Female, age 36–45: 0.300 – 4.00 ng/mL
- Female, age 46+: 0.000 – 1.50 ng/mL
Can reflect PCOS or, in some contexts, certain ovarian conditions.

What are the common causes of high AMH?
- Polycystic ovary syndrome
- High ovarian reserve (normal variation, especially under 30)
- Recent stop of hormonal contraception (rebound)
- Granulosa cell ovarian tumors (rare)
What symptoms go with high AMH?
- Irregular or absent periods, acne, excess hair if PCOS
- Often none
What do clinicians usually check next?
- LH, FSH, testosterone and DHEA-S; pelvic ultrasound for PCOS evaluation
- Fasting insulin/A1c — insulin resistance commonly accompanies PCOS
- For fertility treatment, share the value with the clinic to tailor stimulation
Follow-up tests available at TestWell: FSH (Follicle Stimulating Hormone) ($29.99), LH (Luteinizing Hormone) ($36.99).
How do you recheck AMH?

Common questions
Does a high AMH mean I'm very fertile?
It means a large egg supply, which is not the same as egg quality or regular ovulation. With PCOS, high AMH often coexists with irregular ovulation.
