### Why use TyG instead of HOMA-IR?

HOMA-IR needs a fasting insulin, which is not part of a standard panel and varies between lab assays. TyG uses two numbers on almost every metabolic work-up and was validated against the euglycemic clamp with similar accuracy.

### Why do some sources quote a TyG cut point around 4.5?

The original validation papers reported their threshold on a different logarithmic scale, so their cut points (around 4.5–4.7) are not comparable to the ln(TG × glucose ÷ 2) convention used by most cohort studies and by this calculator, where values run 8 to 10.

### Do my triglycerides have to be fasting?

Yes. Triglycerides rise sharply after eating and stay up for hours, which would inflate the index. Use a fasting lipid panel and a glucose from the same draw.

### What lowers the TyG index?

Whatever lowers fasting triglycerides and glucose: weight loss, less refined carbohydrate and alcohol, more activity, and treating sleep apnea or thyroid disease when present. Because both inputs respond within weeks, TyG is a practical marker to re-check after a lifestyle change.
