# Neutrophil-to-Lymphocyte Ratio (NLR) Calculator

### Should I use the absolute counts or the percentages?

Absolute counts (K/µL or ×10⁹/L). The ratio of the two percentages gives the same number, but percentages can mislead when the total white count is very high or low, and every published NLR range is built from absolute counts.

### What is a normal NLR?

In a large study of healthy adults the reference interval was 0.78–3.53, with most people between 1 and 2. The ratio rises with age and is slightly higher in men; smoking, exercise the day before and time of day all nudge it.

### Why does a high NLR matter?

Neutrophils rise and lymphocytes fall under cortisol and inflammatory signalling, so the ratio amplifies both moves. Elevated NLR has been associated with worse outcomes in infections, cardiovascular disease and several cancers in observational studies — as a marker of systemic inflammation, not a cause.

### Can I get the inputs from a basic CBC?

No — a basic CBC reports the total white count only. You need a CBC with differential, which lists the absolute count for each white cell type.
