## What does the Ureaplasma & Mycoplasma Panel (Urine) test tell you?

Urine test for the three genital mycoplasmas that standard STI panels skip — Ureaplasma, Mycoplasma hominis, and Mycoplasma genitalium.

Ureaplasma species, Mycoplasma hominis, and Mycoplasma genitalium are small bacteria that live in the genital tract and are not part of routine chlamydia and gonorrhea testing. Mycoplasma genitalium is a recognized sexually transmitted infection linked to urethritis, cervicitis, and pelvic inflammatory disease, and it is frequently resistant to first-line antibiotics — so knowing it is there changes treatment. Ureaplasma and Mycoplasma hominis are often found in healthy people, but they are investigated when symptoms persist after negative standard testing, when a partner has tested positive, or as part of some fertility and recurrent-pregnancy-loss workups. This Labcorp nucleic acid amplification test detects all three from a single urine sample and reports each organism separately.

**Clinical use:** Detects Mycoplasma genitalium, Mycoplasma hominis, and Ureaplasma species in urine to explain urethritis, cervicitis, or pelvic symptoms that persist after negative chlamydia and gonorrhea testing.

## Who should order it?

People with ongoing urinary or genital symptoms after a negative standard STI panel, partners of someone diagnosed with Mycoplasma genitalium or Ureaplasma, or anyone asked to test as part of a fertility evaluation.

## Common questions about the Ureaplasma & Mycoplasma Panel (Urine) test

### Is Ureaplasma an STI?

It is sexually transmissible, but it is also part of normal genital flora in many healthy adults, so a positive Ureaplasma result on its own does not automatically mean infection or need treatment. Clinicians weigh it against symptoms. Mycoplasma genitalium is different — it is a recognized STI that causes disease and is treated when found.

### Why doesn't a standard STI panel include these?

Standard panels target the infections screened for in everyone — chlamydia, gonorrhea, HIV, syphilis. Genital mycoplasmas are tested when symptoms continue after those come back negative, which is when this panel is most useful. It reports each of the three organisms separately.

### Should my partner test too?

If Mycoplasma genitalium is detected, current guidance is to test and treat sexual partners to prevent reinfection. For Ureaplasma or Mycoplasma hominis alone, partner testing depends on symptoms — discuss the result with your clinician.

### Urine or swab — which is better?

This test uses first-catch urine, which is validated for all three organisms and avoids a swab. Hold your urine for at least an hour beforehand and collect the first part of the stream; that is where the organisms concentrate.
