## What does the Thyroglobulin Panel (Thyroglobulin + Antibodies) test tell you?

Thyroglobulin level with thyroglobulin antibodies from one draw — the pair used to monitor after thyroid cancer treatment and to evaluate thyroiditis.

Thyroglobulin is a protein made only by thyroid tissue, so after the thyroid has been removed or ablated for thyroid cancer, a rising or detectable thyroglobulin is the earliest signal that thyroid cells remain or have returned; endocrinologists follow it at regular intervals for years. The antibody measurement is run at the same time because thyroglobulin antibodies interfere with the thyroglobulin assay — when they are present the thyroglobulin value can read falsely low, and the antibody level itself becomes the marker that is followed. Outside cancer care, thyroglobulin is raised in thyroiditis, Graves' disease and goiter, and it is sometimes measured to tell factitious hyperthyroidism (taking thyroid hormone) from thyroid overactivity, since thyroglobulin is suppressed in the former. This panel reports both values separately. Results should be interpreted by the clinician managing your thyroid care, ideally with the same laboratory used for previous measurements, because thyroglobulin assays differ between labs.
