## What does the Gastrin test tell you?

Measures gastrin, the hormone that drives stomach acid — high when the stomach has stopped making acid (autoimmune atrophic gastritis, long-term acid blockers) or, rarely, from a gastrin-producing tumor.

Gastrin is released by G cells in the stomach's antrum and tells the parietal cells to make acid; acid, in turn, switches gastrin off. That feedback loop is what makes the test useful. When the acid-making cells have been destroyed — autoimmune atrophic gastritis, the condition behind pernicious anemia — there is no acid to switch gastrin off and the level climbs, often several-fold, which is why gastrin is read alongside the intrinsic factor and parietal cell antibodies in that workup. Proton-pump inhibitors (omeprazole, pantoprazole and relatives) raise gastrin by the same mechanism, so a result drawn on a PPI mainly reflects the medication. Very high levels with active ulcers and diarrhea raise the question of a gastrinoma (Zollinger-Ellison syndrome), which is diagnosed by a gastroenterologist with further testing — this test does not make that diagnosis on its own. Low or normal gastrin with normal B12 makes atrophic gastritis unlikely. Run on serum at Labcorp (test 004390) after a 12-hour fast; eating raises gastrin for several hours.

## Price by lab

| Lab | Test price | All-in (with $6 fee) | Notes |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Labcorp | $39.99 | $45.99 | Choose at checkout; walk-in patient service centers nationwide (not NY/NJ) |

Rhode Island is not served. Prices are identical online and in the lab; no draw fee or physician fee is added.

## How much does a Gastrin test cost?

A Gastrin test costs $39.99 at TestWell — $45.99 all-in, since the $6 lab processing fee is charged once per order and there is no draw or physician fee. Hospital outpatient labs typically bill around $200.00 self-pay. With insurance you pay your plan's negotiated rate against your deductible; TestWell's price is fixed before the draw and HSA/FSA-eligible.

| Where you order | Price | One test, all-in | Notes |

| TestWell (drawn at Labcorp) | $39.99 | $45.99 | Includes the one $6 lab processing fee, charged once per order |
| TestWell (drawn at BioReference — New York & New Jersey) | $42.99 | $48.99 | New York and New Jersey orders route to BioReference; Quest Health and Labcorp OnDemand don't take self-ordered draws in those states |
| Hospital outpatient lab, self-pay (typical) | $200.00 | $200.00 | Reference figure; hospital charges vary widely by facility and are often higher |

## How do you prepare?

Fast 12 hours before the draw (water is fine). Gastrin rises for hours after a meal. If you take a proton-pump inhibitor (omeprazole, esomeprazole, pantoprazole, lansoprazole), ask your clinician whether to pause it beforehand — PPIs raise gastrin several-fold and will dominate the result; do not stop a prescribed medication on your own.

## Common questions about the Gastrin test

### How long does it take to get Gastrin test results?

Gastrin test results are typically ready in 3–5 business days after your draw at Labcorp. TestWell emails you the moment they post, and your results dashboard shows each marker against its reference range with a plain-English explanation.

### Do I need to fast, or can I eat before a Gastrin test?

Yes. The [fasting before blood work guide](https://www.test-well.com/prep/fasting) covers how long to fast, what you can drink, and which results eating changes.

### Where can I get a Gastrin test near me without a doctor?
