## What does the Expanded STI Urine Panel (Chlamydia, Gonorrhea & M. genitalium) test tell you?

One urine sample screens for chlamydia, gonorrhea, and Mycoplasma genitalium — the STI most standard panels leave out.

Chlamydia and gonorrhea are the two most common bacterial STIs, and Mycoplasma genitalium (Mgen) is the one most panels skip even though it causes the same picture — urethritis, cervicitis, and pelvic inflammatory disease — and often persists after the antibiotics used for the other two. This Labcorp nucleic acid amplification test checks all three from a single first-catch urine sample and reports each separately. It fits when symptoms continue after a negative chlamydia and gonorrhea result, after a partner's Mgen diagnosis, or when you want the fuller picture from one visit.

**Clinical use:** Detects Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, and Mycoplasma genitalium from urine to diagnose or rule out the bacterial causes of urethritis and cervicitis, including the one standard panels miss.

## Who should order it?

Sexually active adults with urinary or genital symptoms — especially symptoms that persist after a negative chlamydia and gonorrhea test — or anyone whose partner was diagnosed with Mycoplasma genitalium.

## Common questions about the Expanded STI Urine Panel (Chlamydia, Gonorrhea & M. genitalium) test

### What is Mycoplasma genitalium and why test for it?

Mycoplasma genitalium is a sexually transmitted bacterium recognized by the CDC as a cause of urethritis in men and cervicitis and pelvic inflammatory disease in women. It is often resistant to azithromycin, the antibiotic commonly given for chlamydia, which is why symptoms that persist after standard treatment are a classic reason to test for it.

### Is a urine test as accurate as a swab?

For these three organisms, first-catch urine is a validated specimen with sensitivity comparable to a swab for genital infections. Hold your urine for at least an hour and collect the first part of the stream. Throat or rectal infections require a swab and are not covered by this test.

### How soon after exposure can I test?

Nucleic acid tests can detect these infections within days, but waiting at least 1–2 weeks after a possible exposure reduces the chance of a false negative. If you have symptoms now, test now and retest later if needed.

### What happens if something is positive?

All three are curable with antibiotics, though the right drug differs — Mycoplasma genitalium in particular needs a specific regimen. A positive result should be treated by a clinician, and recent partners should be tested and treated to prevent reinfection.
