## What does the Candida Antibodies Test (IgG, IgA, IgM) test tell you?

Measures three classes of antibody (IgG, IgA, IgM) to Candida albicans — used to support a diagnosis of invasive or deep candida infection in the right clinical setting.

Candida albicans is a yeast that lives harmlessly in the mouth, gut, and vagina of most people, so nearly everyone has some antibody to it. This test measures three classes: IgM, which appears early in a new or invasive infection; IgA, associated with mucosal surfaces; and IgG, which reflects longer-term exposure. Clinicians use the pattern — particularly a raised IgM, or a rising titre on repeat testing — alongside cultures and symptoms when investigating invasive candidiasis in people who are immunocompromised, on long courses of antibiotics or steroids, or recovering from abdominal surgery. The limitation is important: a positive IgG by itself is common in healthy adults and does not prove infection or 'overgrowth', and a negative result does not fully exclude invasive disease in people who cannot mount an antibody response. Results are reported for each class with the laboratory's reference range. For thrush or a vaginal yeast infection, a swab or culture is the appropriate test, not blood antibodies.

**Clinical use:** STI and infectious disease testing identifies current or past infections that often present without obvious symptoms — preventing complications, transmission, and long-term sequelae.
