## What does the Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time (aPTT) test tell you?

Measures the intrinsic clotting pathway — used to monitor heparin therapy and screen for clotting factor deficiencies.

Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time (aPTT) measures how long it takes blood to clot through the intrinsic and common coagulation pathways. It's the standard test for monitoring patients on unfractionated heparin therapy, evaluating unexplained bleeding or bruising, screening for clotting factor deficiencies (including hemophilia A and B, von Willebrand disease, and Factor XI deficiency), and assessing for lupus anticoagulant antibodies. aPTT is often ordered alongside PT/INR for a complete coagulation workup, especially before surgery.
