# Can blood tests explain mood swings and irritability?

> Sometimes. Thyroid dysfunction, sex-hormone shifts (perimenopause, low testosterone), disrupted cortisol and low vitamin D all affect mood and are measurable. TSH, estradiol or testosterone, morning cortisol and vitamin D are the standard checks. Normal results are useful too — they turn attention to sleep, stress and mental-health support.

## When should you see a clinician instead of ordering a test?

- Thoughts of harming yourself or others — call or text 988 or emergency services now
- Mood changes with confusion, severe headache or a recent head injury — seek care

## Why these tests for mood swings and irritability?

Both hypo- and hyperthyroidism change mood; estrogen fluctuation in perimenopause is a classic cause of irritability and low mood; low testosterone in men is linked to irritability and low motivation; and vitamin D deficiency is associated with depressive symptoms. Cortisol screens for the rare adrenal causes.

## Which conditions do these tests help evaluate?

- [Thyroid Problems](https://www.test-well.com/conditions/thyroid-problems) — TSH, Free T4/T3 and antibodies to evaluate an under- or over-active thyroid.
