# What blood tests are used for easy bruising?

> Bruising more easily than usual is checked with a CBC (platelet count), prothrombin time/INR (clotting factors), a comprehensive metabolic panel (liver function, since the liver makes clotting factors), and vitamin C, whose deficiency weakens blood vessels. Medications — aspirin, blood thinners, steroids, fish oil — are the most common non-lab cause.

## When should you see a clinician instead of ordering a test?

- Bruising with nosebleeds or gum bleeding that won't stop, blood in urine or stool, or tiny red spots (petechiae) — see a clinician promptly
- Large bruises without any injury, especially with fatigue, fever or bone pain — see a clinician promptly

## Why these tests for easy bruising?

Platelets and clotting factors stop bleeding; low platelets, impaired liver function or vitamin K–dependent factor problems lengthen bleeding and produce bruises. Vitamin C deficiency (scurvy) still occurs and causes bruising and gum bleeding. Age-related skin thinning causes harmless forearm bruising that tests won't explain.

## Which conditions do these tests help evaluate?

- [Anemia](https://www.test-well.com/conditions/anemia) — CBC, iron studies, ferritin, B12 and folate to find the cause of fatigue and low energy.

## Common questions

### Does easy bruising mean a bleeding disorder?

Usually not — medications, aging skin and minor knocks explain most of it. Tests find the minority with low platelets, liver disease or clotting-factor problems, which is why the screen is worth doing when bruising is new or unexplained.
