# Which blood tests check for causes of dizziness?

> Lightheadedness — especially on standing — is checked for anemia (CBC, ferritin), low or high blood sugar (glucose, A1c), dehydration and electrolyte problems (metabolic panel), thyroid disease (TSH) and vitamin B12 deficiency. Spinning vertigo is usually an inner-ear problem that blood tests don't diagnose.


## When should you see a clinician instead of ordering a test?

- Dizziness with chest pain, fainting, a severe headache, double vision, trouble speaking or weakness — call emergency services
- Dizziness after a head injury, or with a very slow or very fast pulse — seek care

## Why these tests for dizziness and lightheadedness?

Anemia and dehydration both lower the blood's ability to keep the brain perfused on standing; blood-sugar dips cause lightheadedness and shakiness; low sodium or potassium and thyroid disease disturb blood pressure regulation; B12 deficiency affects balance nerves.
