# Which lab tests help with chronic bloating?

> Chronic bloating with diarrhea, fatigue or weight change deserves a celiac screen (tTG-IgA with total IgA), a CBC and iron studies for the malabsorption it can cause, and stool calprotectin when inflammatory bowel disease is a concern. Most bloating is functional (IBS) and produces normal tests — which helps rule out the conditions that don't.


## When should you see a clinician instead of ordering a test?

- Bloating with blood in the stool, black stools, persistent vomiting or severe pain — see a clinician promptly
- Persistent bloating with pelvic pain, early fullness or unexplained weight loss, especially in women over 50 — see a clinician
