# Can blood tests find a physical cause of anxiety?

> Sometimes. An overactive thyroid, low magnesium, low vitamin D and cortisol problems can produce or worsen anxiety, palpitations and restlessness. TSH (with Free T4), magnesium, vitamin D and morning cortisol are the usual checks; normal results point back toward the psychological and lifestyle causes that are far more common.

## Why these tests for anxiety?

Hyperthyroidism mimics anxiety closely — racing heart, tremor, sweating, poor sleep — so TSH is the one test most worth running. Low magnesium is associated with irritability and muscle tension; low vitamin D with mood; and morning cortisol screens for adrenal problems, which are rare.

Most anxiety is not caused by a lab-detectable problem. Blood work rules out the physical mimics so treatment can focus where it helps.
