# Does donating blood affect blood test results?

> Yes, for weeks. A whole-blood donation removes about a pint of blood and with it roughly 200–250 mg of iron. Hemoglobin and hematocrit dip right away and recover over several weeks; ferritin — the iron store — falls further and can take two to three months or longer to rebuild, especially in frequent donors, women, and anyone with a low baseline. Serum iron drops and TIBC rises as the body tries to absorb more. If you are being tested for anemia or iron deficiency, tell the clinician when you last donated; for a clean iron baseline, wait about eight weeks after a whole-blood donation. Platelet or plasma donations affect these numbers much less.

## How much iron does a donation take, and how fast does it come back?

Each whole-blood donation removes roughly a pint, which carries about 200–250 mg of iron — a meaningful fraction of the body's stores. The bone marrow replaces red cells within a few weeks, but to do so it draws on ferritin, so the iron store falls after the blood counts have already recovered. Frequent donors, premenopausal women, teenagers and people who eat little red meat rebuild stores slowest, and blood-bank studies find a substantial share of regular donors with low ferritin despite a passing hemoglobin at the donation screen. The Red Cross advises frequent donors to consider iron supplementation or a multivitamin with iron for this reason.

The hemoglobin screen at the donation centre is a fingerstick with a pass/fail threshold; it is not the same as a CBC and it does not measure iron stores at all.

## When should you test after donating?

For a CBC or iron panel meant to be your baseline, about eight weeks after a whole-blood donation is a reasonable interval — the same minimum spacing the blood banks use between donations. If the draw cannot wait, tell the clinician the date; a mildly low hemoglobin with a low ferritin and high TIBC a few weeks after donating is the expected picture of iron loss, not a new diagnosis. If your ferritin is already low, discuss iron replacement and donation frequency before the next donation rather than after the next low result.
