# What does a high TIBC mean?

> TIBC (total iron-binding capacity) is high when the body makes more transferrin to grab scarce iron — the classic pattern of iron deficiency, where TIBC rises as ferritin and saturation fall. Pregnancy and oral estrogens also raise it. On its own it is a supporting clue, read alongside ferritin, serum iron and saturation.

### High TIBC but normal ferritin — what does it mean?
