# What does a high Small LDL Particle mean?

> Small dense LDL particles penetrate the artery wall more easily and oxidize faster than large ones, so a high small-LDL count marks a more atherogenic profile. It is driven almost entirely by triglycerides and insulin resistance: as triglycerides rise, LDL is remodeled into smaller particles. Lowering triglycerides — less sugar and alcohol, weight loss, activity, treating diabetes — shifts particles larger.

## What is the normal range for Small LDL Particle?

- age 18+: 0.000 – 527 nmol/L

Often reflects insulin resistance or metabolic syndrome and adds risk beyond LDL-C alone.

## What are the common causes of high Small LDL Particle?

1. Insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes
2. High triglycerides and low HDL
3. Central obesity, inactivity, refined-carbohydrate diets
4. Genetic pattern B lipoprotein phenotype
5. Hypothyroidism

## What symptoms go with high Small LDL Particle?

- None

## What do clinicians usually check next?

- Triglycerides, A1c, fasting insulin, ApoB
- Lifestyle changes aimed at triglycerides; retest in 3–6 months
- Cardiovascular risk review with a clinician

## How do you recheck Small LDL Particle?

| Test or panel | Type | Price | Fasting | Results |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| [Advanced Cholesterol Particle Test (NMR)](https://www.test-well.com/tests/nmr-lipoprofile) | Test | $70.99 | Yes | 3–5 business days |

Plus one $6 lab processing fee per order; physician authorization included.

## Common questions

### Can I change my LDL particle size?

Yes — small LDL responds to lowering triglycerides. Cutting sugar and alcohol, losing central fat, exercising and improving insulin sensitivity all shift the profile toward larger particles within months.
