# What does a low Red Blood Cell Count mean?

> A low red blood cell count is anemia in most cases and shares its causes: iron, B12 or folate deficiency, blood loss, chronic disease, kidney disease and bone-marrow problems. Overhydration and pregnancy lower it mildly. The MCV, reticulocyte count and ferritin sort the causes quickly.
