# What does a high PSA Total mean?

> A high PSA does not equal prostate cancer. Benign prostate enlargement (common with age), prostatitis or urinary infection, recent ejaculation, vigorous cycling, a recent rectal exam or catheter, and lab variation all raise it. Finasteride and dutasteride roughly halve PSA, so results on those drugs are doubled for interpretation. A raised PSA is typically repeated in 6–8 weeks before any further step.

## Common questions

### What PSA level is concerning?

Above 4 ng/mL is the traditional threshold, but age matters (2.5 for men in their 40s, 6.5 for men over 70 by some scales) and the trend matters more than one number. A confirmed, persistent or rising level is what prompts a urology evaluation.

### I take finasteride. How do I read my PSA?

Double it. Finasteride and dutasteride cut PSA roughly in half after six months, so a 2.5 on finasteride is read as about 5.
