# What does a high Progesterone mean?

> High progesterone is normal in the second half of the cycle and rises steadily through pregnancy, so a raised level most often means ovulation happened or a pregnancy is underway. Progesterone medication (vaginal, oral, injections) raises it, and rare adrenal or ovarian causes exist. Outside pregnancy and medication, a high level is rarely a concern.

## What is the normal range for Progesterone?

- Male, age 18+: 0.100 – 0.500 ng/mL
- Female, age 18+, varies by cycle phase: 0.100 – 25.0 ng/mL

## What are the common causes of high Progesterone?

1. Luteal phase of a normal cycle
2. Pregnancy
3. Progesterone medication (fertility treatment, hormone therapy)
4. Rare: ovarian cysts or tumors, congenital adrenal hyperplasia

## What symptoms go with high Progesterone?

- Breast tenderness, bloating, fatigue (luteal/pregnancy)

## What do clinicians usually check next?

- Pregnancy test if not already known
- Cycle-day check
- Rarely, further evaluation if very high without explanation

## Common questions

### Is high progesterone a sign of pregnancy?

It's consistent with it but not proof — the luteal phase raises progesterone every cycle. A pregnancy test answers the question.
