# What does a high Platelet Count mean?

> A high platelet count (thrombocytosis) is usually reactive — a response to iron deficiency, infection, inflammation, recent surgery or bleeding, or spleen removal. Persistent, unexplained elevation, especially above about 600 × 10³/µL, is evaluated for essential thrombocythemia and related bone-marrow disorders with a JAK2 test.

Often reflects inflammation, recovery from blood loss, or in rare cases a marrow disorder.

## What are the common causes of high Platelet Count?

1. Iron deficiency (a frequent, under-recognized cause)
2. Infection or inflammation, including inflammatory bowel disease
3. Recent surgery, trauma or bleeding
4. Spleen removal
5. Essential thrombocythemia and other myeloproliferative disorders

- Usually none
- Headache, visual changes, burning hands and feet, clots in myeloproliferative disease
