# What does a low Phosphorus mean?

> Low phosphorus results from poor intake or absorption (malnutrition, alcohol use, antacids that bind phosphate, vitamin D deficiency), shifts into cells (refeeding after starvation, insulin treatment, recovery from ketoacidosis), or losses through the kidneys (hyperparathyroidism, some medications). Mild lows are often meaningless; severe lows cause weakness and, rarely, heart and breathing problems.

## When does this result need same-day care?

- Phosphorus below ~1.0 mg/dL, or a low value with muscle weakness affecting breathing — same-day care

## What is the normal range for Phosphorus?

- age 18+: 2.50 – 4.50 mg/dL

Can reflect poor nutrition, alcohol use, or certain medications.

## What are the common causes of low Phosphorus?

1. Vitamin D deficiency, malnutrition, alcohol use disorder
2. Aluminum or magnesium antacids binding phosphate
3. Refeeding syndrome, insulin therapy, recovery from diabetic ketoacidosis
4. Hyperparathyroidism, renal phosphate wasting, some IV iron products
5. Respiratory alkalosis (hyperventilation)

## What symptoms go with low Phosphorus?

- Muscle weakness, bone pain, fatigue
- Confusion, breathing difficulty and heart rhythm problems when severe

## What do clinicians usually check next?

- 25-hydroxyvitamin D, calcium, PTH, magnesium, kidney function
- Medication and alcohol review
- Repeat fasting

Follow-up tests at TestWell: [Magnesium](https://www.test-well.com/tests/magnesium) ($19.99), [Calcium](https://www.test-well.com/tests/calcium) ($26.99), [PTH (Parathyroid Hormone)](https://www.test-well.com/tests/parathyroid-hormone-test) ($59.99).

## How do you recheck Phosphorus?

| Test or panel | Type | Price | Fasting | Results |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| [Kidney Health Panel](https://www.test-well.com/tests/kidney-health-panel) | Panel (4 tests) | $64.99 | Yes | 2–4 business days |
| [Total Body Panel](https://www.test-well.com/tests/total-body-panel) | Panel (49 tests) | $499.99 | Yes | 5–10 business days |
| [Renal Panel](https://www.test-well.com/tests/renal-panel) | Test | $23.99 | No | 2–4 business days |

Plus one $6 lab processing fee per order; physician authorization included.

## Common questions

### How quickly does phosphorus recover?

Diet-related lows correct within days once intake and vitamin D are adequate; persistent loss through the kidneys needs its cause treated.
