# What does a high Neutrophils mean?

> A high neutrophil percentage or count (neutrophilia) is most often the normal response to a bacterial infection, inflammation, physical or emotional stress, recent exercise, smoking or corticosteroids. Very high counts with immature cells, or persistent elevation without a cause, are evaluated for bone-marrow disorders. The absolute count matters more than the percentage.

- Neutrophil count over ~30 × 10³/µL, or a high count with unexplained bruising, bone pain or night sweats — prompt evaluation

5. Chronic myeloid leukemia and other myeloproliferative disorders (rare; very high counts, immature forms)

- Depends on the cause — fever, localized pain or swelling with infection

## Common questions

### Percentage high but absolute count normal — does it matter?

Usually not. A high percentage with a normal total white count often just reflects a low lymphocyte count; the absolute neutrophil count is what clinicians act on.
