# What does a high Monocytes mean?

> A high monocyte count (monocytosis) reflects chronic inflammation or the recovery phase of an infection — tuberculosis, endocarditis, autoimmune disease, inflammatory bowel disease and recovery from neutropenia all raise it. Persistent unexplained monocytosis, especially with other abnormal counts, is evaluated for myelodysplastic or chronic myelomonocytic disorders.

## What are the common causes of high Monocytes?

1. Chronic infections: tuberculosis, endocarditis, brucellosis, syphilis
2. Autoimmune and inflammatory disease, inflammatory bowel disease, sarcoidosis
3. Recovery from acute infection or chemotherapy
4. Smoking, chronic stress
5. Chronic myelomonocytic leukemia, myelodysplasia, lymphoma (rare; persistent)

## What symptoms go with high Monocytes?

- Usually none
- Fever, fatigue, weight loss with a chronic infection or inflammatory disease

- Repeat CBC with differential in 4–6 weeks
- CRP/ESR; targeted infection or autoimmune tests

## Common questions

### What monocyte level is too high?

Above about 0.8–1.0 × 10³/µL absolute (roughly over 8–10%). One mildly high value after an infection is expected; the same value three months later is what gets investigated.
