# What does a low INR mean?

> A low INR (below about 0.8) means blood clots slightly faster than average. It is usually a lab or diet variation with no clinical significance in someone not taking anticoagulants. In someone on warfarin it means under-anticoagulation — the dose is too low, a food or drug interaction is at play, or doses were missed — and the prescriber adjusts.

## What is the normal range for INR?

- age 18+: 0.800 – 1.10 ratio

## What are the common causes of low INR?

1. Normal variation; high vitamin K intake (leafy greens, supplements)
2. Warfarin dose too low, missed doses, interacting foods or drugs
3. Estrogen therapy (mild)

## What symptoms go with low INR?

- None

## What do clinicians usually check next?

- No action off anticoagulants
- On warfarin: dose review with the prescriber

## How do you recheck INR?

| Test or panel | Type | Price | Fasting | Results |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| [Blood Clotting Panel](https://www.test-well.com/tests/blood-clotting-panel) | Panel (4 tests) | $149.99 | No | 3–7 business days |
| [Prothrombin Time with INR](https://www.test-well.com/tests/prothrombin-time-inr) | Test | $23.99 | No | 1–3 business days |

Plus one $6 lab processing fee per order; physician authorization included.

## Common questions

### Does a low INR mean I'm at risk of clots?

Not by itself. Clot risk is about other factors; INR below range only matters when it shows an anticoagulant isn't working.
